Storage Shooters Hill Health and Safety Policy
Storage Shooters Hill is committed to providing a safe, healthy and secure environment for all employees, customers, contractors and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risk in our storage facilities and associated removals operations, ensuring that activities are carried out in a way that prevents injury, ill health, and damage to property.
Policy Aims and Scope
This policy applies to all Storage Shooters Hill premises, vehicles, staff, agency workers, contractors and visitors. It covers all activities associated with storage, removals, packing, handling, loading, unloading and transportation of goods, as well as general office and site operations.
Our aims are to:
Promote a positive health and safety culture where everyone accepts their responsibilities. Prevent accidents, near misses, injuries and work-related ill health. Identify and control hazards associated with storage and removals activities. Comply with relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. Provide safe and well maintained premises, equipment and vehicles. Offer clear information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure safe working practices.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Storage Shooters Hill has overall responsibility for health and safety. They will provide the leadership, resources and support necessary to implement and maintain this policy and will ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into business planning and decision-making.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy in their areas of control. This includes ensuring that risk assessments are carried out, safe systems of work are followed, incidents are reported and investigated, and staff receive appropriate training and supervision.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, including temporary staff, have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff are expected to:
Follow company health and safety procedures at all times. Use equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly. Report hazards, defects, near misses and incidents immediately to a manager. Co operate with any health and safety investigation or audit. Refrain from horseplay or unsafe behaviour that could cause harm.
Failure to comply with health and safety requirements may be treated as a disciplinary matter.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Storage Shooters Hill carries out regular risk assessments for all significant hazards related to our storage facilities and removals operations. This includes manual handling, working in confined storage areas, use of trolleys and lifting equipment, vehicle movements, working at height where applicable, and interaction with customers and visitors on site.
Control measures are implemented to reduce identified risks so far as is reasonably practicable. Safe systems of work are established for tasks such as loading and unloading vehicles, stacking and accessing goods in storage units, securing loads for transport, and managing traffic flows around our premises.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling and the safe use of handling equipment are central to our removals and storage services. We are committed to minimising the risk of musculoskeletal injuries by:
Providing training on correct lifting techniques, use of trolleys, dollies and other aids. Assessing loads for weight, size, stability and access before lifting or moving. Using mechanical aids or team lifting for heavy or awkward items. Prohibiting staff from lifting items that exceed safe limits or that cannot be moved safely.
All equipment is selected, used and maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety standards. Defective equipment must be removed from use immediately and reported.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our removals and transport operations are managed to reduce the risks associated with driving and vehicle movements. Drivers must hold a valid licence for the class of vehicle they operate and must follow all road traffic laws and company procedures.
Vehicles are regularly inspected and serviced, and pre use checks are required before departure. Loads must be properly distributed and secured to prevent movement during transit. Speed limits and site traffic rules must be observed at all times, with particular care taken in areas shared with pedestrians.
Site Safety and Housekeeping
Storage Shooters Hill maintains high standards of housekeeping to prevent slips, trips and falls and to ensure safe access to units, offices and loading bays.
Walkways, fire exits and emergency routes must be kept clear at all times. Spills must be cleaned up promptly and reported where necessary. Waste materials and packing materials must be disposed of safely and regularly. Stacking of goods must be stable, with heavier items at lower levels and safe height limits observed. Customers are expected to follow site rules and instructions given by staff, particularly in loading and unloading areas.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
We take fire safety seriously and implement measures to prevent, detect and respond to fire and other emergencies. Fire detection and alarm systems, extinguishers and emergency lighting are installed and maintained in accordance with legal requirements and manufacturer guidance.
Emergency evacuation procedures are clearly displayed on site and explained to staff. Fire exits and escape routes are kept unobstructed at all times. Staff receive training in emergency procedures, including how to raise the alarm and assist visitors where safe to do so. Regular drills and checks are carried out to confirm that procedures remain effective.
Health, Welfare and First Aid
Storage Shooters Hill provides suitable welfare facilities including toilets, washing facilities and rest areas. Adequate first aid provision is maintained on site, with trained first aiders and appropriate first aid supplies available during operational hours.
Any work related injury, incident or near miss must be reported as soon as possible so that first aid can be provided and the circumstances investigated to prevent recurrence.
Contractors and Visitors
Contractors working on our premises must follow this Health and Safety Policy and any specific site rules or permits that apply to their activities. Contractor competence is assessed where relevant, and work is monitored to ensure that safe practices are followed.
Visitors and customers are required to comply with safety instructions given by Storage Shooters Hill staff. Children and vulnerable persons must be supervised at all times while on site, particularly in loading areas and vehicle zones.
Training, Consultation and Communication
We provide health and safety induction training for all new employees and role specific training for tasks with particular risks, such as manual handling, use of equipment and driving duties.
Ongoing refresher training is provided as necessary, and changes to procedures are communicated clearly. Staff are encouraged to raise health and safety concerns or suggestions for improvement, and consultation will take place on significant changes that may affect their health and safety.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
Storage Shooters Hill regularly monitors health and safety performance through inspections, audits, incident reports and feedback from staff and customers. Where shortcomings are identified, corrective actions are taken and procedures updated.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, to ensure that it remains effective, relevant and aligned with current legislation and best practice.
By working together and following this policy, we can maintain a safe environment for everyone using our storage and removals services.
